The Southern Baptist California Disaster Relief Chaplains arrived in
Crescent City Monday to provide support to the victims of the
recent tsunami.

Services provided include emotional support, spiritual care, crisis
intervention and trauma relief. The Chaplains work closely with the
American Red Cross to provide these services wherever needed. They will
be available at the Lighthouse Community Center located at 2455 Oliver
Ave., Crescent City. Services are private and confidential.

“We are here in Crescent City because we recognize the disaster this is
for the community and we are here to support them,” said Meta Velez,
lead Chaplain for Region 1 California Disaster Relief.

The tsunami event resulted from an 8.9 magnitude earthquake that
occurred in Japan on March 11. California has experienced numerous surge
events since and remains under a tsunami advisory. The Crescent City
Boat Harbor sustained significant damage to its docks. Crews have
identified 16 sunken vessels in the harbor. Multiple state and federal
agencies are on scene to survey the channels for navigation, conduct
damage assessments, and prevent petroleum spills from the damaged
vessels.

"We witnessed total devastation of outlying villages, collapsed buildings, a lack of infrastructure, very little running pottable water, very little food for the people and limited medical staff and supplies," said Chief Petty Officer Clifford Fuller of MSST San Francisco 91105.

The unit was on-call 24/7 for the first nine days of their deployment and averaged 12-16 hour days during their deployment.

"Our training for intra-control points was vital in our ability to plan on the move during our many security details and during crowd control,"said Fuller. "Our trained emergency medical technicians provided quick assessments and quicker medevacs." The unit was staffed with two combat lifesavers and one EMT.

Petty Officer 3rd Class Cory McDermott, an EMT assigned to MSST San Francsico 91105, who was instrumental in assessing injuries and arranging numerous medevacs for injured Haitians, commented on the importance of teamwork within his unit. He said, "Petty Officer 1st Class Marcel LeRoy, our interpreter from MSST Miami, and Petty Officer 2nd Class Jonathan Edwards, our Corpsman from New Orleans, made life a lot easier on us and they were instrumental in our successful mission."

The MSST unit was part of a multi-agency and multi-national strike force that had the resources and opportunity to help the people of Haiti in their time of need.

SAMOA, Calif. – A crew from U.S. Coast Guard Station Humboldt Bay rescued two men and a dog from the waters off of Fields Landing in Humboldt Bay, Calif., Saturday morning.

At 5:37 a.m., the California Highway Patrol transferred a 911 emergency call to the Coast Guard. Two men were hunting duck onboard a 14-foot aluminum boat when their vessel flipped after burying its bow into a wave. One of the men on the vessel was able to place the 911 call before his cell phone became inoperable. Immediately, a 47-foot Motor Lifeboat from Station Humboldt Bay was dispatched from Samoa, Calif., to the scene.

The 47-foot Motor Lifeboat arrived in the area and joined Humboldt County Sheriff personnel who were searching the waters from the shoreline. The Coast Guard boat spotted the men in the water when one of the hunters signaled the Coast Guard with a flashlight. The rescue boat maneuvered into position and pulled the two men and their dog onboard. The dog and one of the two men were wearing lifejackets.

The motor lifeboat transferred the men and dog to emergency medical service personnel at the Fields Landing pier. Both men were suffering from exposure due to having been immersed in the 50-degree water temperature of Humboldt Bay. The hunter who was not wearing a lifejacket was described as “extremely hypothermic” by Petty Officer Second Class John Duncan, the coxswain of the motor lifeboat.

“We provided them blankets and used a hypothermic recovery suit to start bringing the survivor’s core temperature up while we brought them to Fields Landing,” said Petty Officer First Class Jeremiah Wolf, who was on board providing first aid to the survivors.

After transferring the survivors to EMS, the motor lifeboat returned to Station Humboldt Bay.

The Coast Guard strongly recommends that all mariners, especially those on smaller vessels, wear lifejackets and have access to a waterproof marine VHF radios when underway. In coastal waters, a marine VHF radio is the most efficient and reliable method to contact the Coast Guard.

ALAMEDA, Calif. - A suspected cocaine smuggler died in Guatemala Tuesday following the seizure of his boat in the Eastern Pacific Ocean by the U.S. Coast Guard. The man was medevaced to Guatemala City when he sustained possible engine fragment or shrapnel injuries after shots were fired to disable the boat's engines as it fled from authorities.

A U.S. Coast Guard helicopter, operating from a Coast Guard cutter patrolling the area, pursued the suspicious craft, signaled the operator to stop, and fired warning shots. The boat did not stop so rounds from a high powered rifle were aimed at the boat's engines to disable them.

A Coast Guard boarding team, in a pursuit boat dispatched from the cutter, discovered the injured suspect when they reached the disabled craft. The man was immediately transferred to the cutter, where a medical technician worked to stabilize his condition, then medevaced to Guatemala City by helicopter. He was transferred to an ambulance ashore in critical but stable condition but was pronounced dead at the hospital.

An investigation will be conducted to review the details of Tuesday's interdiction operation, try to determine exactly what caused the man's injuries, and ensure all appropriate procedures and safety measures were followed.

"We extend our condolences to the suspect's family," said Capt. Kevin O'Day, chief of response for the 11th Coast Guard District. "The U.S. Coast Guard and partner agencies go the extraordinary lengths to minimize the chance of injury to suspected smugglers. It is regrettable, in this case, that the smugglers did not heed our multiple orders or warnings to halt," he said. "We deeply appreciate the assistance of the Guatemalan Air Force, the Guatemalan Military Medical Center and the Centro Medico hospital for their efforts to organize the medevac of the patient."

Two other boats were stopped as part of Tuesday's counter-drug operation. One of those vessels halted after orders to stop and warning shots from the helicopter. Another boat ignored warnings and required engine-disabling gunfire to make it stop. Five suspected smugglers and bales of cocaine thought to have been thrown overboard from the three seized boats are in custody of U.S. authorities. The interdictions occurred in international waters approximately 32-miles off the west coast of Guatemala.

Injuries to smuggling boat crews in connection boat engine disabling fire from helicopters are rare. Including Tuesday's incident, U.S. Coast Guard records indicate there have been two fatalities and two serious injuries to suspects out of 176 cases where the tactic was used since it was initiated in the late 1990's.

The law enforcement phase of U. S. drug interdiction operations in the Eastern Pacific are conducted under the tactical control of the 11th Coast Guard District headquartered in Alameda, California. In 2009 some 135 tons of cocaine were intercepted in the Eastern Pacific by U.S. Coast Guard and partner agencies operating in the region.

Video of two boaters in distress

SAN FRANCISCO— The Coast Guard hoisted two men to safety today after their vessel began taking on water near Liberty Island in Dixon, Calif..

At 10:32 a.m. the Coast Guard received a report of a vessel taking on water near the Liberty Island Bridge. The two men were reportedly duck hunting when heavy winds began pushing waves over the side of their 10-foot boat. A Coast Guard 25-foot response boat from Station Rio Vista and an MH-65 Dolphin helicopter from Air Station San Francisco were dispatched to the scene to render assistance.

Unable to reach the boaters by response boat due to the limited depth of water, the decision was made to hoist the two men into the Dolphin helicopter. Both men were safely hoisted and transported to Buchanan Field in Concord, Calif. where members of the Solano County Sheriffs Department awaited.

No injuries were reported.

With more strong storms forecasted to impact the Northern California coast throughout the week, the Coast Guard advises mariners to heed weather warnings and remain off the water. Mariners who must take to the water should make sure proper safety equipment is onboard, and exercise caution. As strong storms create heavy surf, the Coast Guard also advises the public to remain away from beaches, jetties, rocks and cliffs. Large waves, heavy surf and rip currents can be deadly.
